Cream melts into yellow, yellow spirals into coral and pink, and cooler greens and blue-gray shadows appear where the petals turn away from the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted those shifts to remain visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAgainst the open blue background, the blossoms seem almost illuminated from within, while the darker branches, buds, and foliage provide beautiful contrast to make that light feel even stronger.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eLaʻa Kea o Kekaha\u003c\/em\u003e is ultimately a celebration of that contrast—the tropical richness of the plant and the softness of light passing across it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003ePainted in Watercolor\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe transparency of watercolor was especially suited to this painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than creating the flowers through heavy opaque color, layers of transparent pigment allow light from the paper to remain part of the image.
