After catching their dinner, they climbed the seaside cliffs to cook their fish and noticed something moving through the clear shallows below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was an enormous moray eel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stayed with me most was not simply the eel, but the \u003cstrong\u003ebird’s-eye perspective\u003c\/strong\u003e — looking through the moving surface of the ocean and being able to see another world beneath it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat perspective sparked the idea that eventually became \u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eA Stronger Language Inside Watercolor\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAround the time I created this painting, I had recently seen how meaningful ʻaumakua symbolism could be to someone close to me as I did a forearm tattoo for them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat experience had me thinking about ancestry, family connection, the natural world, and the power that a strong symbol can carry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArtistically, I became curious about something else too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCould I bring the bold, graphic language I knew from years of tattooing into a medium I usually experienced as soft, transparent, and fluid?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat felt a little risky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhich, of course, made me want to try it. 😉\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tiger shark moves quietly beneath luminous tropical water while the bold geometric pattern along the side introduces a completely different visual energy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne is fluid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne is structured.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne feels almost weightless.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe other has strength and rhythm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI loved discovering that they could live together without either one having to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWater Made From Stone\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMuch of the water in \u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e was created with shimmering mineral and gemstone watercolor pigments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn softer light, the water reads as layers of turquoise, aqua, blue, and green.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen stronger light reaches the original, those mineral pigments begin to respond differently — catching and reflecting light through parts of the surface and giving the water another dimension.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat quality is especially difficult to reproduce in a photograph or print.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is something the original reveals more fully when viewed in person.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always loved materials that allow light itself to become part of the artwork, and \u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e became another opportunity to experiment with that relationship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eLooking Beneath the Surface\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the shark is a powerful presence in the painting, I did not want it to dominate the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective asks the viewer to look through the surface first.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLight, submerged rock, changing depth, movement, and the shark all exist within the same body of water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a distance, the piece reads graphically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMove closer and the softer watercolor layers and shimmering pigments begin to reveal themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast became one of the things I loved most about the finished work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe Beginning of Another Painting\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e also became important in a way I could not have known when I painted it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bird’s-eye ocean perspective stayed with me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI knew I wanted to return to it on a much larger scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat fascination eventually became the starting point for my 2026 oil painting \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.kauaichristiesart.com\/products\/nalu-me-na-nalu-original-oil-painting\" title=\"Nalu me nā Nalu\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNalu me nā Nalu\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the later work, the animal and graphic symbolism gradually gave way to the water itself as I began learning to surf and developing a different relationship with the ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the original spark — looking down through moving water into the layers beneath it — began here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn that way, \u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eNalu me nā Nalu\u003c\/em\u003e share the same muse while telling two very different
