After catching their fish, they climbed the seaside cliffs, built a fire, and cooked their dinner. While enjoying the view from above, they noticed something moving through the shallow shoreline below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was an enormous moray eel — they estimated it at nearly six feet long — swimming through the clear water beneath them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe eel itself was a wild sight, but what stayed with me most was the \u003cstrong\u003ebird’s-eye perspective\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking down from above, I could see through the moving surface of the ocean into another world beneath it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat image sent energy through my heart, and I could imagine a beautiful, peaceful yet powerful painting emerging from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eFrom Mano to Nalu\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI first explored that idea in a small watercolor that eventually became \u003cem\u003eMano Niho\u003c\/em\u003e — \u003cstrong\u003eShark Tooth\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat earlier painting included a tiger shark moving beneath the surface and became the first finished expression of the perspective that had intrigued me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I knew I wasn’t finished with the idea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to explore it much larger and in oil on canvas — not simply enlarging the watercolor, but going deeper into the water itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen something happened that changed the direction of the painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was learning to surf, spending time in the ocean and\u003cstrong\u003e learning to move with it.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rolling energy of the waves began to feel almost alive to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy inspiration grew along with the waves in the painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd what began as a painting inspired by ocean life slowly became a painting \u003cstrong\u003eabout a relationship with the ocean itself.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cb\u003eLearning to Move With Water\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI grew up surrounded by snow and Lake Tahoe, spent years as a professional snowboarder moving over and through snow, and spent summers swimming and wakeboarding on the lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThroughout my artistic life, I have painted water in many forms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLearning to surf is giving me another humble relationship with water altogether.\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eNalu me nā Nalu\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe title arrived just as I was connecting with this new relationship with the ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Hawaiian word \u003cstrong\u003enalu\u003c\/strong\u003e can refer to a wave or surf.
