Up close, all of the smaller patterns, flowers, lines, and details begin to reveal themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 dir=\"auto\"\u003eOrigin \u0026amp; Inspiration\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eNani Honu\u003c\/em\u003e grew out of an earlier turtle painting I had created.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat first piece was a somewhat more realistic tattoo \u0026amp; tribal-inspired honu surrounded by watery blues and stylized fish. I loved the direction it was taking me, and the painting sold almost immediately while it was hanging at the CrossFit gym where I was coaching at the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eInstead of simply recreating it, I wanted to see how much further I could take the idea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"UTF-8\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI painted the honu with transparent watercolor, filling her with tropical florals, curling wave forms, and brilliant washes of orange, red, green, and blue. I then surrounded her with a luminous field of stylized water created with reflective blue gemstone watercolors and patterns inspired by Pacific Island art and design. Metallic silver linework travels throughout the composition, defining the intricate shapes while catching and reflecting the light as you move around the painting.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eI enjoyed bringing these elements and joyful colors together with the Honu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eAnd apparently I’m not the only one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eOver the past year at my gallery, \u003cstrong\u003eKaua‘i Christie’s Art, \u003cem\u003eNani Honu\u003c\/em\u003e has become one of my three best-selling images in cards and prints and, by far, the most purchased image from my Silver Lining Series.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat surprised me—and I love discovering which paintings people form their own connection with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 dir=\"auto\"\u003eAbout My Silver Lining Series\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eMy \u003cstrong\u003eSilver Lining Series\u003c\/strong\u003e began with an unexpected challenge in watercolor that ultimately pushed me toward something new.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eDrawing from my years of tattooing, I began combining transparent watercolor with \u003cstrong\u003emetallic silver ink\u003c\/strong\u003e, bringing precise linework into the loose and sometimes unpredictable movement of watercolor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe silver gives me another visual language to work with. It can define shapes, create rhythm and structure, or disappear subtly into the painting until the light catches it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThat changing light is especially noticeable in \u003cem\u003eNani Honu\u003c\/em\u003e. Depending on the angle and illumination, the metallic details can appear pale and subtle, distinctly silver, or brightly reflective.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eIt also means that \u003cstrong\u003eno single photograph can completely capture what the original looks like in person.\u003c\/strong\u003e The painting changes subtly as the light—and the viewer—moves around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe name \u003cem\u003eSilver Lining\u003c\/em\u003e eventually came to represent more than the materials for me, too.
