Painting inspiration:

Inspired by a snorkeling trip along Kauaʻi’s breathtaking Nā Pali Coast, this original oil painting captures an unforgettable encounter with one of Hawaiʻi’s most beloved ocean residents—the honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle).

Painted in oil on gessoed board and professionally framed, the piece portrays the turtle gliding effortlessly at the ocean’s surface, suspended between sky and sea. Sunbeams filter through crystalline blue water as the honu’s calm, knowing gaze meets the viewer’s eye, creating an intimate and almost playful connection.

During the snorkeling excursion, we were reminded to stay at least ten feet away from the turtles, as they are protected by law. Yet nature had other plans. This curious honu swam closer and closer, locking eyes with me as I gently backed away—equal parts awe, respect, and surprise filling the moment. For a brief second, I wasn’t sure what he might do… and then I wondered if he was flirting.

This painting celebrates that rare intersection of reverence, humor, and wonder that only the ocean can offer. It is a tribute to the spirit of aloha, the intelligence and personality of Hawaiʻi’s marine life, and the unforgettable moments that stay with us long after we leave the water.
