Blue Hawaii is a meeting of movement, memory, and artistic influence. Inspired by the classic “finger wave” forms found in historical Japanese art and tattoo design, this painting reflects a style that has fascinated me for years—water shaped into sweeping, graceful lines, often paired with flowers or powerful symbolic imagery.
My connection to this visual language began during the years I worked in tattoo shops in the spring and fall, between seasons of my professional snowboarding career. I was drawn to the balance of strength and elegance in these designs, and that inspiration stayed with me long after. Even in 2001, I painted my silver X-Terra with Japanese finger waves and pinstriping, a reflection of how deeply this aesthetic had already become part of my creative world.
In this piece, I wanted to soften that bold tradition into something more fluid, tropical, and personal. The curling blue waves and luminous plumeria blossoms create a fusion of island beauty and stylized motion—an expression of water, energy helping make hearts sing, with colorful island joy.
