A green sea turtle glides through clear ocean water as rays of sunlight filter down from above, surrounding her with light.

There is something almost timeless about watching a honu move through the sea—quiet, graceful, completely at home in her element. In Aloha Spirit, I wanted to capture that peaceful underwater moment when sunlight becomes visible in the water and everything seems to move together.

Built through multiple layers of transparent watercolor glazing, the colors develop remarkable depth and complexity, allowing traces of underlying pigments to subtly influence the finished surface.

The painting also incorporates Daniel Smith mineral and semi-precious gemstone pigments throughout areas of the water, turtle, and shell. As the light changes, these reflective pigments catch subtle flashes of shimmer and luminosity that photographs can only hint at. In person, the piece seems to dance with light.

Aloha Spirit is professionally presented in a beautiful curly koa wood frame with a white textured silk liner and inner koa accent, selected to complement the warm tones of the honu against the luminous blues of the ocean.
