Japanese finger waves move through a field of tropical plumeria in Blue Hawaii, an early work from my ongoing Silver Lining Series.

Origin & Inspiration

The imagery in Blue Hawaii brings together several influences that have followed me through different chapters of my life. My love of Japanese finger waves first grew through tattooing, where they often appear alongside imagery such as cherry blossoms and dragons. That visual language connected naturally with another part of my life — Japan became one of my favorite places to snowboard during my professional career, and I was always drawn to its art, culture, and relationship with water.

I combined those flowing Japanese-inspired waves with plumeria, a flower I deeply associate with Hawai‘i, bringing several of my favorite things together in one piece: water, Japan, tattoo art, and the tropical beauty of the islands.

The imagery became so personal to me that similar finger waves and plumeria now wrap from my wrist, up my left arm, across my shoulder and onto my chest and back as part of one of my largest tattoos.

Created in 2013, Blue Hawaii represents an earlier chapter in the evolution of the Silver Lining Series and a process I continue to explore and develop today.

About the Silver Lining Series

Blue Hawaii is an original mixed-media work created with transparent watercolor and metallic silver ink.

The watercolor provides the luminous shifts of color throughout the waves and plumeria, while the silver linework introduces the graphic structure that became characteristic of my Silver Lining work.

The technique draws from two different chapters of my artistic life—traditional watercolor painting and tattoo-influenced linework—bringing them together into one visual language.

No reproduction can fully capture the way the metallic silver responds to changing light when the original is viewed in person.

The name Silver Lining Art has always meant more to me than the silver linework itself. I’ve long loved the philosophy of looking for the silver lining—finding something meaningful, beautiful, or useful even when things don’t go as planned. In a way, that is exactly how this series began: an unexpected problem with the watercolor paper led me to experiment, adapt, and create an entirely new visual language.
