Warm plumeria glow against a deep tropical night in Mana, an original mixed-media work from my Silver Lining Series. Metallic silver linework, luminous watercolor, and gemstone accents transform the flowers into something almost enchanted—as if their fragrance, color, and presence have become visible.
Origin & Inspiration
Mana was inspired by one of my favorite experiences in Hawai‘i: stepping outside into the warm evening air and unexpectedly catching the fragrance of plumeria.
At night, everything can feel heightened—the scent of the flowers, the warmth of the air, the darkness surrounding the tropical foliage, and the sense that the evening itself is alive. For me, there is something romantic and almost magical about those moments. It might happen while heading out for dinner or simply walking past a flowering tree after sunset, but that sudden rush of fragrance can completely change the atmosphere.
I wanted Mana to capture more than the appearance of plumeria. I wanted to paint the feeling of their presence at night—the sense of life, beauty, mystery, and energy surrounding them.
The Hawaiian word mana carries layered meanings associated with spiritual power, presence, and potency. I chose the title because it resonated with the feeling I was trying to express: that intangible sense of energy I experience when flowers, fragrance, darkness, warmth, and the Hawaiian night come together.
The silver curls, dots, and gemstone accents woven through the petals became a way of making some of that invisible atmosphere visible—little flashes of light, shimmer, and movement within the flowers themselves.
About the Silver Lining Series
Mana is an original mixed-media work created with transparent watercolor, metallic silver ink, and gemstone watercolor accents.
The watercolor creates the luminous shifts of color throughout the plumeria and surrounding tropical foliage, while the metallic silver linework introduces the graphic structure characteristic of my Silver Lining work. Selected curls, dots, and details are accented with gemstone pigments, adding another subtle layer of shimmer that changes with the light.
The technique draws from two different chapters of my artistic life—watercolor painting and tattoo-influenced linework—bringing them together into one visual language.
No reproduction can fully capture the way the metallic silver and gemstone accents respond to changing light when the original is viewed in person.
The name Silver Lining Art has always meant more to me than the silver linework itself. I’ve long loved the philosophy of looking for the silver lining—finding something meaningful, beautiful, or useful even when things don’t go as planned. In a way, that is exactly how this series began: an unexpected problem with watercolor paper led me to experiment, adapt, and create an entirely new visual language.
