Sweet Welcome — Original Silver Lining Watercolor

A celebration of hospitality, abundance, and the simple act of making another person feel valued, Sweet Welcome transforms one of the tropics' most recognizable fruits into a glowing symbol of welcome.

Sweet Welcome is an original watercolor from Christie Marie Elder’s Silver Lining Series. Warm golds, oranges, and reds illuminate the fruit while metallic silver linework travels through the composition, defining each form and adding a subtle shimmer that changes as the light moves across the painting.

Origin & Inspiration

The pineapple has long fascinated Christie not only for its extraordinary taste, form, and color, but for what it has come to represent in history: welcome, generosity, and honoring the people we invite into our lives.

Centuries ago, before pineapple became readily available around the world, the tropical fruit was an extraordinary luxury in Europe and colonial America. Difficult to transport and expensive to cultivate, a pineapple could become the centerpiece of a gathering—a visible expression of abundance and the importance of one's guests. Over time, its distinctive shape became an enduring symbol of hospitality, appearing on entrances, gateposts, architectural details, and objects created for the home.

Pineapple would later become deeply connected with Hawai‘i's own modern history. Introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the early nineteenth century, it eventually grew into one of Hawai‘i's defining agricultural crops and one of the most recognizable symbols associated with island life.

It is that meeting of histories that inspired Sweet Welcome.

For Christie, the pineapple carries a simple message she loves: to welcome someone is to recognize their value. To offer something beautiful, nourishing, and precious is a way of saying, You are important to me and I'm glad you're here.

Created in 2018, Sweet Welcome brings that idea to life through luminous watercolor. Warm golds, oranges, and reds glow through the pineapple while deep tropical greens rise into a brilliant blue landscape. Metallic silver linework traces its remarkable natural geometry, transforming the fruit's familiar pattern into dozens of small bursts of light.

About the Silver Lining Series

Drawing upon years of tattooing experience, she began combining transparent watercolor with metallic silver ink, allowing precise linework to interact with the spontaneous movement of watercolor. The silver brings structure, containment, rhythm, and a second visual language to the paintings while responding beautifully to changing light.

The name Silver Lining became part of the philosophy behind the work as well: finding something meaningful, beautiful, or useful when things don’t go quite as planned.

In Sweet Welcome, that silver linework is especially prominent throughout the pineapple and foliage, catching light differently depending on the viewer’s position and giving the original a quality that photographs can only partially capture.

Framing & Presentation

Sweet Welcome is professionally custom framed in a substantial warm wood frame with a deep-toned silk liner that creates separation between the vivid watercolor and the surrounding wood. The warm frame picks up the gold and amber tones of the pineapple, while the darker liner echoes the deep blues and greens throughout the painting.

The completed framed artwork with acrylic glazing measures approximately 27" × 23" × 1.2" and arrives ready to display.
