Tropical blossoms gather against a deep blue background in Wedding Lei, an intimate original from my Silver Lining Series inspired by the beauty, fragrance, and emotion of lei shared in celebration.
Origin & Inspiration
At weddings in Hawai‘i, lei are often given by family and loved ones as expressions of affection, celebration, and aloha. As each person places another lei around the bride, the flowers can begin to stack so high that they nearly hide her dress.
There is something wonderful about being surrounded by that much love and beauty at once—but just as memorable is the fragrance.
The mingled scents of maile, pikake, plumeria, and other tropical flowers can create an atmosphere that is almost impossible to describe: lush, romantic, celebratory, and unmistakably Hawai‘i.
Wedding Lei was inspired by that feeling of being surrounded by flowers, family, beauty, and love. The blossoms overlap and gather together much like lei themselves, glowing against the rich blue background.
For me, the painting honors one of those rare moments when nature, fragrance, tradition, celebration, and affection all seem to come together at once.
About the Silver Lining Series
Wedding Lei is an original mixed-media work created with traditional transparent watercolor and metallic silver ink.
The watercolor creates the soft, luminous shifts of color throughout the flowers, while the metallic silver linework introduces the graphic structure characteristic of my Silver Lining work.
Unlike some works in the series, Wedding Lei contains no gemstone pigments. Its luminosity comes entirely from transparent watercolor, the depth of the dark background, and the way the metallic silver responds to changing light.
The technique brings together two chapters of my artistic life—traditional watercolor painting and tattoo-influenced linework—into one visual language.
No reproduction can fully capture the way the metallic silver changes as the original is viewed from different angles and under different light.
The name Silver Lining Art has always meant more to me than the silver linework itself. I’ve long loved the philosophy of looking for the silver lining—finding something meaningful, beautiful, or useful even when things don’t go as planned. In a way, that is exactly how this series began: an unexpected problem with watercolor paper led me to experiment, adapt, and create an entirely new visual language.
Framing & Presentation
Wedding Lei is professionally custom framed with a rich blue silk liner and substantial dark wood molding.
The generous framing around this intimate 7" × 14" original was an intentional choice. The blue silk extends the deep color of the painting beyond the artwork itself, while the substantial outer frame gives the smaller piece an unexpected sense of presence.
The finished presentation measures 21.5" × 14.25" × 1.5", transforming the original into a striking, complete work ready to hang.
The frame is included with the artwork.
